We are happy to special order any related item that we might not carry and to have it available, often by the next day, for your convenience. Mikey’s Hookup was born in the summer of 2001 on Bedford Ave & North 5th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The operation was launched on a 3 foot by 6 foot table boasting audio-video cables, adapters, blank CD’s, as well as VHS and mini DV tapes. It offered specially selected items that couldn’t be found in Williamsburg but were desperately needed by the community—and by Mikey
From there, it grew to a 20 square foot booth, then, 150 square foot store, then a 500 square foot store and now one amazing 1700sq foot location. The 5000 different items in stock as well as all the services we provide came from requests made directly by the community over the years.
One thing most customers overlook about Mikey’s Hook Up is how it has been managed to compete with the large corporate giants in the surrounding areas. Large chains are able to purchase thousands of a single product next to Mikey’s twenty of the same item, making their costs incredibly lower. There are actually a large number of items that Mikey’s loses money on just to have them in stock for the customer’s convenience.
Since Dec 2007 Mikey’s has been an Apple Authorized Sales and Warranty Service Center. Within that time, with the help of an amazing staff, Mikey’s has become one of the highest rated Apple repair centers in all of New York City, fixing hundreds of Apple computers per month.
Making an appointment or waiting for hours to meet a technician is never the situation here. We take all your information and your computers’ symptoms and then let our Certified Apple technicians diagnose the problem from there. 15 minutes after walking into Mikey’s hookup you will be out the door finishing up your busy day and awaiting a phone call from the technician.
Of course, every computer will have different issues. In some cases a quick, over the counter fix is possible and in other more complex cases involving part replacements more time will be needed. The average turnaround time for most computer repairs and data recovery is 3-5 business days. We also offer Rush service that puts your repair at the head of the diagnosis line. The last thing we want to see is a computer returning to us with an unresolved problem since we must make room for newer repairs. Mikey’s balances fast service with the taking the time to get it right the first time.
Because we are an Authorized Apple Service Provider, we can perform all Apple Warranty and AppleCare repairs. We offer three levels of repair pricing (not including price of parts) depending on the complexity of the situation. We will never charge an in store repair by the hour. Data recovery also has it’s own set prices for different sizes of hard drives. Our data recovery prices are shockingly lower than most other professional repair centers, not only in New York, but all over the world.
Everyone on staff at the Hook-Up has their own specialty ranging from photography, pro audio, video editing, computer networking and Apple trouble-shooting, and Home Theater setup. No one at Mikey’s works on commission so there is absolutely no reason for anyone to try to sell you something that you don’t really need. The goal of the store is to be totally honest and actually tell customers what we believe will serve your needs best, saving you money and time and building your trust so you come back.
Often corporate chain stores give employees a script to follow and a uniform. New customers to the Hook-Up can be surprised and even disconcerted when our employees deviate from this model. It is not uncommon for us to say things like “you don’t really need that product” or “why don’t you purchase that less expensive cable instead-- it’ll do the same thing”. This approach to customer service is not new—it simply harkens back to a lost time before everything in life got standardized.
The goal of the store is to help the community with their mulit-media needs in a relaxing non corporate environment while still providing excellent value. One way to relax in the store is to play Ping Pong on our Olympic Size Ping Pong table in the middle of each store. This beautiful piece of hardware takes up almost 1/3 of the potential retail selling space but it’s worth it.
Mikey’s is decorated with posters of his childhood inspirations, The Lost Boys, LL cool J , Angus Young , E.T., Pink Floyd, and The Ultimate Warrior rather than typical advertisements that bombard.
In 1989, Mikey experienced a near–fatal gymnastic accident requiring a experimental sixteen hour surgery. In the end, doctors had replaced the hippocampus part of the brain with a futuristic PC5300 2 GB SODIMM RAM chip made by Cyberdyne Systems. (The same RAM can be found in late 2007 MacBooks and MacBook Pros.) Mikey now lives on a privately owned island in the South Pacific where he practices ninjutsu and table tennis with his trainer, 1977 French singles table tennis champion Jacques Secretin.
With the help of the newest iChat program in Mac OS X Leopard, Mikey is able to virtually manage and run both Brooklyn locations. Mikey only makes store appearances when challenged to a table tennis match and when a customer is trying to purchase the wrong cable.
